Director of China-Nordic Arctic Research Center Yang Huigen and his delegation visits SCBC

On the morning of March 13, Mr. Yang Huigen, director of China-Nordic Arctic Research Center (CNARC), Mr. Yang Jian, deputy director of CNARC and Mr. Halldór Jóhannsson, executive director of Arctic Gateway and representative of Iceland, visited SCBC. Chair of the Board Ding Xiaojun, Supervisor Gu Yeli and Vice President Lai Zhili received and held talks with the guests at the International Conference Hall. Heads of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange and the School of Management also attended the meeting.

On behalf of SCBC, Lai Zhili expressed a warm welcome to the guests. SCBC has carried out a lot of work related to polar research under the guidance of the Center since it became an official member of CNARC in 2018. SCBC hopes to take this opportunity to establish good relations with universities and research institutions in Nordic countries and lay a solid foundation for in-depth cooperation in the future.

Halldór Jóhannsson introduced the achievements of the cooperation between China and Iceland--the China-Iceland Aurora Observatory, which is mainly used for space physics research, space weather monitoring and popularization of aurora and space science. He likened the observatory to a “bridge” that links scientific research on one end and popularization of science on the other, one that also serves as tourist attraction to fund the science of monitoring the aurora. He hoped that this “bridge” can help promote cooperative relations and academic exchanges between South China Business College and universities and research institutions in Iceland and other Nordic countries.

The two sides exchanged views on student exchanges, reciprocal visits of teachers and cooperation in Tourism Program.

Mr. Gu Yeli presented gifts to the visitors and a group photo was taken to mark the occasion.

SCBC will set up a Provincial Postdoctoral Research Center

According to a notice recently issued by the Human Resources and Social Security Department of Guangdong Province, SCBC’s application was approved to set up a Provincial Postdoctoral Research Center.

As an innovation platform to serve high-caliber personnel in Guangdong province, the Postdoctoral Research Center will attract and gather doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to create a talent pool and then provide them with assistance to their scientific research, project application and friendly exchanges. The approval is the affirmation of the Human Resources and Social Security Department and the Department of Education of Guangdong province on SCBC’s strengths in scientific research, comprehensive management and service capability. The establishment of such a center means that SCBC has been qualified and will be more empowered to absorb, introduce and gather doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. This is a leap forward in SCBC’s drive to build a stronger team faculty, and a new milestone in the development and cultivation of high-caliber personnel.

In the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan, SCBC will, adhering to the concept of high-quality development, continue its efforts to create a well-structured workforce in which high-caliber personnel will lead young backbone teachers through a team-building strategy that focuses on innovation and teaching competence. The goal is to form an energetic team of teachers who all aspire to turn SCBC into a high-level application-oriented undergraduate university. At present, 48% of the faculty have associate or higher titles, 24% have doctoral degrees, and more than 1/3 have overseas study or/and working experience. SCBC has appointed a number of prestigious professors from home and abroad as academic advisors or visiting professors, as well as a number of industry elites and teachers with expertise as mentors on innovation and entrepreneurship. It has also implemented incentive policies to attract high-caliber specialists and special programs to cultivate ambitious young teachers into backbone teachers.

The approval is also a landmark breakthrough in the construction of SCBC’s human resources, academic disciplines and scientific research platforms. In the future, SCBC will strictly implement the management system and relevant requirements of Guangdong Province on the postdoctoral research centers. It will spare no efforts to build up the Postdoctoral Research Center, developing teams of researchers for high-level research projects and a team of high-level personnel with more reasonable supporting measures for introduction and cultivation of talent. The ultimate purpose is to promote SCBC’s education and teaching to a new level by giving full play to the advantages of the platform, the achievements of which would help drive the social and economic innovation and development of Guangdong province and even the Greater Bay Area.
