1. Department Setup

The School of English Language and Culture comprises four teaching departments: Department of English, Department of English Teacher Education, Department of Translation and Interpreting, and Department of Business English.


2. Faculty and Student Profile

The school has 98 faculty members in total, including 83 full-time teachers and foreign teachers. Among them, there are 14 professors, accounting for 16.9%; 10 associate professors, taking up 12%; 15 PhD holders, making up 18.1%; and 29 dual-qualified teachers, accounting for 34.9%. Teachers with overseas study or work experience account for 63.9% of the total faculty. Besides, 8 distinguished professors from renowned universities are engaged as visiting professors to participate in teaching and discipline development. The school currently has 1,850 enrolled students.


3. Highlights

Adhering to the educational philosophy of consolidating fundamentals, refining skills, integrating knowledge and pursuing innovation, the school focuses on cultivating practical, innovative and international foreign language talents, and has formed distinctive features indiscipline development, teaching and research, practical education, international exchanges as well as employment and further study.


Fruitful discipline development with prominent professional strengths. English Language and Literature is a key provincial featured discipline. The English major, a provincial first-class major, owns profound academic foundation and sound reputation. The Translation and Interpreting major, also rated as a provincial first-class major, has been awarded Five-star China Top Applied Major, gaining nation-wide recognition. Inaddition, one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center and one provincial teaching team have been established.

Mutual advancement of teaching and research consolidating educational foundation. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the school obtained two projects supported by the National Social Science Fund. Teachers published 17 CSSCI-indexed papers and 36 internationally indexed papers, released 21 translated works and 5 monographs and high-level textbooks, and completed 5 decision-making consultation reports. A new provincial research platform, the Multilingual Translation and Communication Center, has been set up.

Remarkable talent cultivation outcomes. The average postgraduate admission rate stands at 8.3%, with nearly 50 students admitted to high-level universities at home and abroad annually. The passing rates of TEM-4 and TEM-8 reach 52.81% and 39.43% respectively, far exceeding the average level of independent colleges nationwide. Students have won 26 awards in provincial and national competitions in the past 5 years, along with 321 honors in influential contests outside the 57 official competitions designated by the Ministry of Education.

Comprehensive practical education system and diversified training platforms. An integrated education mode combining classroom teaching, on-campus training and off-campus internship has been built. Various practical training scenarios covering language application, translation practice, business simulation and teaching skills training are available. The school has established school-enterprise partnerships with foreign-related enterprises, educational institutions and translation agencies in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, building stable off-campus internship bases to enhance students’ practical proficiency, job adaptability and workplace competitiveness. Regular professional contests and language activities such as English speech contests, translation competitions, business English tournaments and teaching skill contests effectively improve students’ comprehensive capabilities.
