Sun Yi of Center of Polar Issues Studies will attend the 2023 AFS Youth Assembly and Global Educators Workshop

Recently, Sun Yi, a full-time researcher at the Center for Polar Issues Studies, has been awarded a scholarship from the Youth Assembly and Global Educators Workshop. He will go to the UN headquarters to attend the 28th Session of the AFS Youth Assembly and other activities in New York City in August as a representative of China's outstanding young teachers. It is reported that only five people from China have been awarded the scholarship.

The selection goes through three rounds. After passing the domestic selection, the candidates will be recommended by the China Education Association for International Exchange to the AFS International Cultural Exchange Organization for the  two rounds of selection organized by the headquarters. In addition to English language skills, the selection for the scholarship focused on the candidates’ understanding of and contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and their education for international understanding, intercultural communication competence, and knowledge of international organizations. In the final round of video interviews, Sun Yi expressed his perspectives on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and his contributions to advancing responses to global climate change and solutions to sustainable development in the Arctic region.

The Youth Assembly and Global Educators Workshop Scholarship aims to support the participation of outstanding young teachers from different countries in the UN Youth Assembly and related activities. The theme of this year's Youth Assembly is “Breakthrough to a Better Future”. The Youth Assembly and related activities will bring together young leaders and educators from more than 100 countries and regions around the world to discuss challenges and responses to global issues such as climate change, information security, multilateralism and regional cooperation, poverty reduction and gender inequality, education and employment through a series of activities around the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
