Famous Hong Kong Linguist Eugene S.L. Chan Visits SCBC


On October 14, a renowned Hong Kong linguist, Eugene S.L. Chan, visited SCBC at the joint invitation of the Virtual Museum of World Languages of Guangdong Provincial Social Science Popularization Base and the Greater Bay Area Language Service Base.

The Chairman of SCBC, Ding Xiaojun, met with Professor Chan and his delegation, extending a warm welcome to their visit. Professor Chan shared his over four decades of research achievements in global language numeral systems and highlighted his concerns regarding the current state of endangered language preservation worldwide. He expressed his eagerness to engage in in-depth collaboration with our university's language science popularization team, jointly contributing to the documentation, research, and preservation of endangered languages globally.

During the subsequent exchange symposium, SCBC Vice President Wang Guanyi expressed sincere gratitude for Professor Chan's visit and expressed high hopes for future research collaboration with our university. On behalf of SCBC, he presented Professor Chan with an appointment letter as “Advisor to the Science Popularization Base of the Virtual Museum of World Languages.”

Subsequently, Professor Chan delivered a thematic lecture to multilingual science communication specialists and student team members from two language science communication bases. He emphasized that with the widespread doption of mainstream numeral systems, traditional numeral methods in numerous minor languages face imminent extinction. Timely documentation of these precious linguistic resources has become an urgent academic imperative.

This exchange not only broadened the academic horizons of faculty and students but also injected new resources and vitality into the development of our university's language-related academic platforms. Cross-regional collaboration with Hong Kong scholars will significantly enhance SCBC's language service capabilities and deepen science popularization practices, further highlighting our distinctive strengths in foreign language education and research.





Professor Wang Mingyu Publishes in Core Journal of China


Recently, Professor Wang Mingyu, Vice President of SCBC, Chair of the Committee of Semiotics of the Association for Logic in China, and President ofthe Chinese Language and Semiotics Research Association, published an academic paper entitled “Neutrality as Intellectual Position: Theoretical Reconstruction Attempting Dynamic Balance, Pluralistic Symbiosis, and the Art of Cross-Cultural Interpretation” on the national academic journal Contemporary Rhetoric (2025,No.251(05) 22-31). The paper systematically proposes a newtheoretical path for cross-cultural interpretation through there construction of  “a neutral view towards signs.”

In his article, Professor Wang Mingyu delves into the theoretical essence and practical pathways of neutral semiotics from multiple dimensions, including “a macro view towards sign,” “integration of langue and image,” “integration of traditional Chinese philosophy,” “Western Post modern Deconstruction”, and “Dynamic Symbolic Analysis." The paper emphasizes that this theory not only offers a semiotic solution to cultural conflicts, technological ethics, and ecological crises in the era of globalization but also demonstrates broad application prospects in fields such as digital media, cultural heritage dissemination, and cross-cultural communication.








The University of Sussex (US), UK, Visits SCBC to Explore New Collaboration on 2+2 Program


On October 17, Robin Banerjee, Vice-President of the University of Sussex (US), UK, and his delegation visited SCBC. On behalf of SCBC, Vice-President Chen Linhan attended the meeting with the guests in the International Conference Hall. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on multi-faceted cooperation, laying the foundation for future collaborative development between SCBC and The University of Sussex (US).

Vice President Chen Linhan extended a warm welcome to Robin Banerjee and his delegation and introduced our university’s education orientation, disciplinary structure, and achievements in internationalization. Robin Banerjee expressed gratitude for the warm reception and provided a detailed overview of the University of Sussex’s history, academic strengths, and current international collaborations. He specifically discussed the university's practical teaching and exchange experiences in media studies with Yi WenViceDean of School of Culture and Communication. Both sides then engaged in in-depth discussions on key issues, including course alignment standards, credit transfer procedures, and student application requirements, establishing a preliminary framework for cooperation.








SCBC Students Win Second Prize at 2025 BCSDTI


On October 19, the First Designand Implementation of Innovative Competitions for International Research Travel Courses (South China Division) of the 2025 Belt and Road and BRICS Competition of Skills Development and Technology Innovation (BCSDTI) successfully concluded. The competition attracted participation from multiple universities in South China, including Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, and Xiamen University of Technology. Awards included one first prize, two second prizes, and three third prizes. The team from SCBC, composed of students majoring in Hotel Management and Tourism Management, delivered an outstanding performance, securing second place overall in the undergraduate category and winning the second prize.
